An outdoor museum of architecture with an impressive number of magnificent buildings, like no other city in Greece. Hermoupolis is built with unique elegance on a naturally amphitheatrical site. Famous for its impressive architecture, which marries the romantic classicism with the western standards, the capital of Syros was created in 1822, during the Greek War of Independence from the Ottomans. Quickly, it became an important trade center between East and West. Dedicated to the ancient Greek god Hermes, Hermoupolis's impressive economic boom, accompanied by cultural flowering, created the first genuine Greek bourgeoisie.
The capital island of the Cyclades complex is different from the rest.
